Layers - Marco Gasser

Layers is the result of a four-year exploration and progression in the fields of instant photography and abstract painting—a multidisciplinary approach that emerged during a late-night studio exercise in the presence of my twin brother, Fabio, back in 2020, and gradually became a deeply personal form of self- expression. In the pursuit of finding sense and beauty in unpremeditated, casual, and sometimes accidental outcomes, this creative journey has filled my days with new learnings, failures, courage, joy, frustration, patience, countless hours of experimentation—and, above all, meaning.

The 213 x 262 mm sized book, designed by Carolina Márquez Bernard, features 104 overpainted Polaroids—taken and painted between 2021 and 2024—that have been carefully selected and arranged across 160 pages. The specific book dimensions match those of a scaled Polaroid image, allowing for creative layout combinations between original Polaroid-sized images and full-page scaled reproductions, generating an engaging mixture of landscape, portraiture, and abstract imagery. A divided short poem, printed on tracing paper and placed at the beginning and middle of the book , reinforces the visual evolution between the more subtle artworks and the bolder abstract painting techniques.
