Black History Map New York

A guide to over 50 sites that tell the story of Black life, culture and resistance in New York City.

This two-sided map invites you to explore the history of New York City across all five boroughs — from Seneca Village and Harlem’s Walk of Fame to the Apollo Theater, the African Burial Ground and beyond.

Written by public historian Dominique Jean-Louis, with original photography by Jason Woods, the map connects places to people and movements that have shaped the city for more than 400 years — including Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Audre Lorde, and the communities who built and rebuilt the city around them.

Designed for those who want to experience the city’s layered history on foot, the map is a starting point for deeper engagement with New York City’s past and present.
